Pre-em herbicides are the foundation for weed control in many grain crops. But sometimes pre-emergent herbicide performance may not be as expected, or outcomes in certain some situations are difficult to understand.
We would like to invited you to a short 3-hour discussion session focusing on getting more from pre-emergent herbicides, which will be led by Mark Congreve from ICAN. Mark is a nationally respected herbicide expert that who leads several GRDC herbicide research and training projects.
We want to understand what is on your mind. Topics to be discussed:
- What drives pre-emergent herbicide efficacy and crop safety?
- Are there opportunities to extract greater value from pre-ems if the research were conducted?
- Are there particular use patterns for pre-emergent herbicides giving you concern ? Or maybe not performing as you expect? This could be in relation to crop safety, or weed efficacy, or carryover. We are especially interested in hearing from growers working with difficult or marginal soil types.
- What decision support advice would help you better understand rotational crop safety at an individual paddock level?
- Have you ever considered variable rate pre-emergent herbicide application tailored to different soils or weed pressure in your paddocks within paddocks?
- Are there other areas of pre-emergent herbicide research that require industry investment?

Monday 4 August 2025, 1-3:30pm
Birchip Cropping Group, 73 Cumming Ave, Birchip, Vic 3483
At Minnipa and Griffith The session will finish with an opportunity for those interested to undertake a field walk looking at rotational crop effects from a cross section of pre-emergent herbicides that were applied to different soils in 2024. This trial is part of a national GRDC research project to better understand herbicide persistence and predict rotational crop safety at an individual paddock scale.
All growers and agronomists are welcome to attend. There is no charge for the day, however RSVP is greatly appreciated for morning/afternoon tea and notes: Register below or contact Erica at erica@icanrural.com.au 02 9482 4930
